Why Does Skin Health Look Different For Everyone?

Many factors play a role in our skin's health – genetics, age, lifestyle, the list goes on – but there is no "one size fits all" solution to achieving healthy skin. Depending on individual needs, those with different skin types will experience varied challenges in maintaining skin health. But what is healthy skin, and how can we tailor our skincare routines depending on skin type?

What does healthy skin look like?

The skin, the human body's largest organ, forms a barrier to the outside world. We couldn't live without it – but how do we know if our skin is healthy? For most people, the following are some signs of healthy skin:

  • Skin feels hydrated and smooth and doesn't feel tight, dry, or flaky
  • Skin is free from itchiness, rashes, or irritation
  • Your skin has minimal damage from the sun (due to regular protection from UV rays)
  • You have a clear and even complexion

Skin Health For Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, your skin may appear shinier than other skin types, but the good news? Due to the extra oil content of the skin, oily skin types usually develop fewer fine lines and wrinkles than those with dry skin.

To manage an oily complexion, try not to use overly harsh or drying products on the skin. These can cause the skin to produce even more oils to compensate for the loss of hydration. Use a gentle cleanser, exfoliator, and an oil-free moisturising product if preferred.

Keeping the skin fully hydrated, especially overnight, is vital in keeping your skin's oil levels balanced.

Skin Health For Dry Skin

Those with dry skin [link to dry skin blog?] often struggle to keep skin hydrated, and tight, rough skin can become a problem if not addressed. Use a gentle cleanser to remove makeup. A cleansing oil or makeup remover balm won't strip the skin of essential moisture and will help prevent dryness after cleansing. You'll want to avoid over-exfoliating, too, as this can make rough, dry patches worse.

Follow-up cleansing with a hydrating serum and a moisturiser for dry skin. Regularly apply a hydrating face mask to infuse maximum hydration into the skin – you'll soon see a significant improvement.

Skin Health For Combination Skin

Combination skin typically has oily and dry patches and can be challenging to manage. As a rule, we want to balance out the oil and moisture levels on the skin. So that any dry areas are well hydrated and oily areas don't go into overdrive producing excess oil. How do we do that? Those with combination skin should avoid anything that may irritate the skin. Heavily fragrance products, stripping or harsh ingredients that overly dry out the skin, or products that clog the pores must be avoided. Regularly use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells, and always use a moisturiser after cleansing to maintain skin hydration. Skin Health For Ageing Skin

As we age, our skin naturally produces less collagen, the protein that keeps our skin supple and firm. We are more likely to see fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity as we age. However, there are a few things we can do to maintain our skin's health through this process:

  • Always protect the skin from sun exposure
  • Limit the use of alcohol and smoking, which can cause collagen to break down faster
  • Prioritise getting enough sleep
  • Limit stress
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle of a balanced diet and exercise
  • Maintain skin's hydration levels daily through moisturising and using face masks

Skin Health For Sensitive Or Acne-Prone Skin

It can be challenging to maintain a healthy complexion while battling blemishes and acne-prone or sensitive skin (read here to find out more about the causes of acne and what you can do to fix it). Overall, products that care for the skin without causing irritation or inflammation will result in the healthiest skin possible for this skin type. Avoid intensely fragranced products and over-exfoliation – these can exacerbate redness and will not help to clear the skin. It may be beneficial to use products that contain gentle exfoliating ingredients like salicylic acid, which will help to shed dead skin cells from the surface and help prevent future breakouts.
